Chesa Marchetta

Chesa Marchetta is a love letter to the Engadin. Housed in a historic 16th-century building, the hotel managed to preserve the thick stone walls and "sgraffito" façades while introducing a sophisticated, curated interior. It feels less like a hotel and more like the private alpine residence of a world-traveled art collector—intimate, warm, and deeply authentic.

The 13 bedrooms are a masterclass in alpine minimalism. Designed by the renowned Luis Laplace, each room features a dialogue between traditional Engadin furniture and contemporary art. Expect reclaimed wood, bespoke textiles, and windows that frame the jagged peaks of the Upper Engadin like living paintings. The top-floor suite offers the ultimate sanctuary, but even the standard rooms carry a sense of history that modern builds simply cannot replicate.

The restaurant is a tribute to the culinary legacy of Maria and Christina Godly. The menu celebrates the "marriage of Italian and Swiss cultures," utilizing seasonal ingredients from the valley. With only 46 covers, the atmosphere is candlelit and hushed, perfect for long evenings over local game, handmade pasta, and robust regional wines.

The public areas are dotted with works by local artisans and international artists, creating an environment where high culture meets high altitude. It’s a place for quiet reflection after a day on the slopes or hiking through the Fex Valley.

Situated in Sils Maria, the "cultural center" of the Engadin, the hotel is steps away from where Nietzsche and Cocteau once sought inspiration. It is quieter and more poetic than its glitzy neighbor, St. Moritz, which is just a 20-minute drive away.

In winter, the Furtschellas and Corvatsch cable cars are within easy reach, offering some of the highest and most reliable skiing in Switzerland. In summer, the trails leading into the Val Fex offer some of the most stunning alpine vistas in Europe.

The Nietzsche House (Nietzsche-Haus) is a must-visit for a dose of philosophy. For a quintessential Engadin experience, take a horse-drawn carriage ride into the car-free Val Fex directly from the village square.

Fly into Zurich or Milan (both approx. 3 hours by car). Alternatively, take the world-famous Glacier Express or Bernina Express to St. Moritz and hop on the local postal bus or a private transfer to Sils Maria.
