What's the Story

  • The hotel has a long history that dates back to the beginning of touring the Alps in the 18th century. First mentioned in a formative German travel book “Die Eisgebirge Des Schweizerlandes” by Gottlieb S. Gruner, published in 1760, has undergone many significant changes since. Starting life as a primitive mountain hut it was then converted into a shelter providing food and drink to weary travelers. By the early 19th century it became a popular mountain inn and by 1865 it was opened as the Hotel Jungfrau that we know today. Over the years many famous composers, poets, writers, and artists have stayed here and an intriguing collection of well-known drawings, prints, and photographs record the history and events that are detailed in the late Kaspar von Almen’s story of the Wengernalp - hotel proprietor from 1958 – 2007.

Wine & Dine

  • The hotel has a reputation for excellent contemporary cuisine as well as local traditional dishes and international delicacies. A five-course set menu is served every evening.
  • The attractive dining room serves modern cuisine to international delicacies at dinner with an extensive wine list of fine and local wines and is one of the best in the region.
  • A cozy bar is ideal for a fireside drink with friends before or after dinner.
  • The popular Jungfraustube restaurant and lounge is perfect for lunch, an evening game of cards, or a glass of wine around the fire.
  • The elegant drawing room with its beautifully upholstered classic chairs is a snug place for reading or a quiet moment with a cup of tea and maybe a slice of homemade chocolate cake.

Ski Paradise

  • The Jungfrau region is known for having some of the most extensive and varied skiing in Switzerland. With over 200 kilometers of ski runs from challenging black runs for experts to plenty of easy reds and blues for novices and intermediates making it is ideal for families and all grades of skiing ability.

Winter Activities

  • In winter, Wengen is the ideal starting point for the family-friendly ski region of Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen with 110 km of predominantly easy to medium-difficulty pistes, and the renowned World Cup piste on the Lauberhorn. The neighboring ski areas of the Jungfrau region, Grindelwald-First, and Mürren-Schilthorn are also easily accessible. The clean air, the long hours of sunshine – especially in winter – the toboggan runs, and around 50 km of winter hiking trails also serve to attract non-skiers to the sunny resort.

Summer Activities

  • Over 500 km of marked walking trails and 15 mountain cableways in the surroundings lead to the most beautiful vantage points of the Jungfrau region; take for example the classic panorama route between Wengen and the Kleine Scheidegg, which offers up a particularly impressive view of the rock massif of the mighty Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Wengernalp is a convenient starting point to travel up to the Jungfraujoch. Strongly recommended is the Eiger Trail hike at the foot of the Eiger north face as well as the scenic panoramic walk from the Männlichen over to Kleine Scheidegg, with its view down to Grindelwald and across to the Wetterhorn.

When to Go
