The Location
Megève, which sits at 1,100 meters in the hollow of the Mont Blanc massif and is easily the chicest ski resort in the French Alps. With the village itself dating back to the 13th century, it became fashionable in the early 20th century thanks to the Rothschild family. After the First World War, Baroness de Rothschild visited the picturesque village and decided it was the perfect place to create her dream of a French ski resort that would rival the Swiss favorite St. Moritz. Seduced by its cobbled streets, traditional farmhouses, and the spectacular views from the Mont d’Arbois plateau, she commissioned Megève’s first hotel and ski lifts in the 1920s, and Megève fast became a magnet for aristocrats and financiers. Its effortless elegance and authenticity, which it has preserved to this day, also lured in iconic stars including Brigitte Bardot, who spent her second honeymoon with Jacques Charrier in Megève in 1959. Today, it is a huge ski area with more than 235 pistes for all levels, which makes it perfect for families. There are also plenty of tree-lined paths for cross-country skiers and idyllic mountain huts for slopeside lunches. Due to its lower altitude, Megève is a well established summer resort too, with beautiful hikes to tick off, including a very special one to the Calvaire waterfalls. For a bird’s-eye view of Mont Blanc, take to the skies with the team at Megève Altiport.
